How Lonely Does It Get?
The Mexican poet Octavio Paz once wrote that “eyes speak, words look, looks think. To hear thoughts, see what we say, touch the body of an idea. Eyes close, the words open.”[1]This inseparable connection between the senses is central in Karen Dana’s works. As Dana paints with her brush she embodies the labor of women in her family who worked with their hands while knitting, baking and washing. Her compositions offer an intimate and complex narrative of caring and nurturing. Karen Dana’s paintings set in motion a dialogue between private spaces and the various dimensions of domesticity and motherhood.
Artist/Mother podcast. In this episode, Karen and I discuss the roles of identity, narrative, and community in being an artist/mother. She probes the grey areas of experience, identity, and the function of art while both generating and reconstructing inter-generational familial knowledge in her art. Karen talks about the importance of visual and material cultures in the legacies of her family’s identity — from her grandparents, whose oral histories Karen and her siblings recorded in a notebook, to her three children, whose creations continue to inspire Karen’s own. Additionally, we confront the complications of making art today, as art and the experiences that drive it are threatened in different ways by the contemporary American political climate. Nonetheless, we agree that art remains an important conduit for curiosity, growth, and knowledge.
“Extended Self: Transformations and Connections,” a group exhibition featuring the work of artists whose work has been extended, amplified, or transformed by the experience of motherhood. Curated by the collaborative Extended Practice – co-founded by Sara Holwerda and Angela Lopez – this exhibition, Resource Library, and accompanying programming aim to highlight the intersections between art-making and parenting as well as increase visibility for artists who are mothers. The exhibition will be on view in the Art Center’s Kanter McCormick Gallery
